History and Accomplishments

Highlights of Accomplishments - 2000

  • With urging from CRC, Representative Vernon J. Ehlers (R-MI), the U.S. House of Representatives sponsors and helps to pass H.R.280 on to the Senate, recognizing the importance and commitments necessary to creating a strong marriage.
  • Advocated the modification of proposed language in Federal laws to eliminate the opportunity of “emergency custody jurisdiction”; which inadvertently encourages custodial parents to forum-shop for increased child support payments through parental abduction to another state.
  • Equal Parents’ Week Candlelight Vigil held in 25 states, with Governor Robert Taft formally adopting September 17-23, 2000 as Equal Parents’ Week in Ohio.
  • The Children’s Rights Council joined in a Father’s Day demonstration march from the White House to the Capital as part of the Fathers Day 2000 national rally.
  • In support of Lady Catherine Meyer, wife of the British Ambassador to the United States, several Congressional hearings and a subsequent Congressional Resolution was passed calling for improved implementation of the International Hague Convention on Child Abduction.  During President Clinton’s visit with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, an agreement to establish a bi-lateral commission to examine systemic problems was approved.
  • Successfully advocating for the return of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez to his father in Cuba, CRC appeared more than 30 times in broadcast and mass media, to help the INS and the U.S. justice system understand the problem was not a political issue but one of parenting on the basis that the father was the only surviving parent of the child.
  • CRC welcomes the nationally recognized organizations Co-Mamas, dedicated to helping improve the dynamics of parent/stepparent relationships; and Parenting Coalition International, a network building and resource funding group, as national affiliate organizations.
